London’s DV8 (Dance and Video 8), a leader in contemporary dance, offers a visceral and highly political dance theater piece featuring live performers, documentary, animation and film. To Be Straight With You is an explosive and powerful work based on hundreds of hours of audio interviews. Under the artist director Lloyd Newson, the multiethnic cast offers a poetic and unflinching exploration of intolerance, religion and sexuality. Taking physical and aesthetic risks and delving into complex philosophical issues, DV8’s radical but accessible work is a constant re-examination of the roles and relationships of men and women in our society. Suitable for ages 16+.

Sings Like Hell presents
King Wilkie & Jonathan McEuen
Lobero Theatre
Saturday, November 21 at 8:00 p.m.

Experimentation and reinvention has always been a thread in the fabric of King Wilkie. First founded as a furiously hard-driving bluegrass band in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2003, the band was hailed by bluegrass purists as the music’s great young hope. Drawing equally on pre-bluegrass American forms and more contemporary influences, the band recast their bluegrass instrumentation into increasingly more orchestral textures for their second album (Low Country Suite). Their most recent album, King Wilkie Presents: The Wilkie Family Singers, features a cast that includes Robyn Hitchcock, David Bromberg, Abigail Washburn, John McEuen, Sam Parton of The Be Good Tanyas, and Peter Rowan.

Jonathan McEuen was born to play music and bring joy to those listening. Good genes and a star-studded “extended musical family” are great (his dad's a famous rock star banjo picker), but when people respond to Jonathan’s extraordinary voice and guitar playing, it’s obvious he’s more than “just another son of a star.” He spent his youth and now his young adult life on the road, doing what he loves most, playing guitar and singing with the family, playing electric and acoustic guitar, singing background for a number of world class artists, and fronting his own bands. Most recently, he put in serious time as half the lead of major label duo Hanna McEuen. That experience confirmed he was ready to move forward and create music outside the confines of his influences or a specific genre.
